Betta Fish Breeding – How To Breed Betta Fish
Breeding betta fish is a complex and rigorous endeavor, not to be attempted without the right equipment and proper research. Before you begin attempting to breed betta fish, there are a number of things that you need to consider. You need to ensure that you have both the time and the money necessary to be able to commit to betta breeding, because otherwise, you will find it hard to succeed. It is advisable that you have access to a decent size pond that has no other fish in it. It is also advisable that you have previous experience in caring for betta fish, prior to attempting to breed betta fish. If not, then it would be better for you to first learn the fundamentals of caring for betta fish. You can visit our betta care page, for more info on caring for betta fish.
If you are sure that you meet the above criteria, then you need to first buy a mating tank. Ensure that the tank is at least a ten gallon tank. Do not accessorize the tank too much. A few leafy plants and a gravel bottom is all that is required for successful mating. Keep the temperature at about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with a starting depth of six inches. Unlike normal betta tanks, you need to have an air filter in the mating tank. You must be careful when selecting a suitable filter, because most air filters are too powerful and it is advisable to use an older box type filter, that uses an air pump. It is a good idea to let the pump go through a complete cycle before putting any betta fish in.
After you have got a good tank setup, you need to purchase a female and male betta. Female bettas are often hard to buy due to the low numbers stocked by many pet stores. If you are new to betta breeding, then it is advisable to buy cheap betta fish, that are perhaps lower quality, in order to save money if anything should go wrong. Only when you have mastered the process of breeding betta fish, should you begin purchasing more expensive betta fish. Do not put the male and female bettas in the same tank. Put the male betta in the mating tank and put the female betta in a separate tank, however make sure that they can both see each other.
The female betta must produce an abundance of healthy eggs before the process of betta breeding can even commence, this requires a specific schedule of feeding. The food must be of a specific quality, frequency, and variety in order to encourage the female betta to initiate her spawning cycle. In numerous reports and discussion forums where ideas, successes, and failures are exchanged, it has been proven that the right foods at the right times are crucial to egg development. In addition to the effects that an abundant and nutrient rich food source has on the female, it has an equal effect on the male. When the male betta fish is well fed and his water is changed daily his natural instinct to mate is kicked in automatically, he will begin to construct a bubble nest on the surface towards one side of the tank. Breeding betta fish can be time-consuming because the schedule must be followed consistently in order to achieve optimal betta breeding conditions. Feeding must be done morning and evening and should consist of the following food, in these orders, until the female has swollen with eggs and the male has built his bubble nest. Begin with BettaMin, freeze-dried blood worms, frozen or live brine shrimp, and finish with a small amount of live black worms. Complete this process twice a day until the female is showing a full abdomen.
During proper betta breeding, changing the water in the male’s tank will provide the further stimuli that he needs to begin his bubble nest. Each day remove and replace twenty percent of the water until you begin to see the male hard at work. Once you see signs that the female and male are ready to breed, then it is time to introduce the female betta to the male betta.
The male will attack the female, and in most cases every other male, that is put into their bowl. Some mild males can cohabitate though it is best to separate them for the sake of erring on the side of caution. It is not uncommon for the male to attack the female at first. She may back away from him, if she does this continuously, she is refusing to let him mate, and the female should be removed to her own tank before the male significantly hurts her. When the female eventually allows the male nearer herself, he may cut her fins and she may take nips at the male, but she should allow the male to mount her from the top. At this point, she releases her eggs while he fertilizes them; the eggs continue to float up into the nest. After successful mating, the male will not tolerate the females company and if she is not removed immediately, the male will kill her, which shows the patience and responsiveness that a betta breeder must have in order to be successful.
Numerous trials have been performed to test the various habitats to raise betta fry. Some believe they achieve the best results in indoor tanks and farms, while others swear by the benefits offered by a natural pond. Each has their individual merits and short comings, although breeding betta fish successfully by raising fry in a pond has shown the best results in recent studies, because when multiple fish are housed together they fight for food and therefore not all of them receive the same nutrition. Pond-raised betta fish have access to natural micro organisms that are thought to foster healthy growth and development.
Betta breeding is more of an art form than a science as nature does not always respond logically. To teach someone how to breed betta fish is to let them try it themselves, learn from their mistakes, and ultimately succeed through their own resourcefulness and determination, although many successful betta breeders will testify that to become successful, you have to be prepared to thoroughly research the subject of betta breeding and even be prepared to fail before you succeed, but after all, seeing your hard work pay off is what betta fish breeding is all about.
Aspiring betta fish owners need to be careful when selecting a betta breeder to buy from. Some betta fish breeders are better than others. Some Betta fish breeders raise their fry together in tanks with other betas, this choice results in skirmishes and scaring or tearing of the long fins, reducing the aesthetic value of the fish. If you are prepared to spend a little bit of time choosing betta breeders who offer single-fish tanks, a quality and abundant food supply, and a strong breed of betta to begin with, then you will be aptly rewarded with a stunning betta fish.
